Even if shot very independently, “Irma” by Svetlana Mertsalova makes it for a very peculiar thriller-crime hybrid story. It is based on a classical plot, Sophie wants to kill her husband because he fell in love with Irma, another woman, but the lady already knows her plans.
Staged in a beautiful antique rich mansion full of paintings – a great set for a crime story – the story is very entertaining and full of suspense. Characters also have a very good costume design and make up.
Acting, sound and music are made on the model of classical Hollywood films, creating an atmosphere for the thriller emotions to develop. We’d very much like to see a film like this shot on a proper budget with a big production, to see what this director could do when given the chance to make the big jump.
