“Smushy, Soggy Sandwiches”, the new film by Nolan Schmidt is a delicate and very short childhood story shot with an astonishing sensitivity. Schmidt’s narrative is crystal clear and there is no emotional filter between the staging and the content of the film. The spontaneity of this short film breaks down the reasonable wall that exists between reality and fiction: everything happens naturally and freely and the camera seems to adhere to the unexpected happiness of children as if it were simply a witness to a small wonder. Here, in “Smushy, Soggy Sandiwiches” delicacy is not built: it just happens.
