12 Feb “THE MAGICAL WATCH” by Richard Schertzer
“The Magical Watch” is a very short film that flows before the eyes like a rapid flapping of wings. After the vision there remains a sense of deep fascination, which leads us to reason about forms and meanings. Richard Schertzer’s short is truly a visual experiment capable of reshaping cinematographic material by taking its risks and its freedoms, in an exciting result. The aesthetics, dominated by a soft and enveloping black and white, immerses us in the suggestions of a comic book, and the very particular directing choice to fragment the movements in very few frames per second favors this fictitious and dreamy dimension. The soundtrack ferries us definitively into an indefinite space, in color and movement, which seems very close to that of dreams.
Films like this impose a very strong identity on the directors of tomorrow, and certainly Richard Schertzer still has a lot to tell us.
