“IN QUESTO MONDO DI LADRI” by Emanuele Sicignano e Emanuele Tofani

“In this world of thieves” is a hilarious comic portrait of a family in the time of covid-19. Following the urgency of telling the latest global events, the film is a small step forward in contemporary cinematographic narration. Starting from the script, well written, dynamic and sagacious, the film develops like a fun appointment with delirium, as the protagonists are overwhelmed by forced isolation. With intelligent irony, the two directors, Emanuele Sicignano and Emanuele Tofani, exacerbate the feelings of frustration and suffering felt by billions of people during the lock-down period. Even through comedy, the two directors show that it is possible to rework the pain and look at destiny from another perspective. Every stylistic choice in this film is a game: from gags to shots, there is always an enthralling baroque taste for chaos, quotationism, mockery and self-irony. The editing and the acting of the protagonists give this “pastiche” narrative rhythm and coherence and the film, which lasts almost an hour, seems to run away too quickly, for the lightness and hilarity that it arouses. An excellent cinematographic test, as well as an excellent example of independent cinema. It is not necessary to have large budgets. It is necessary to have something to say, and the two directors have been able to communicate it with talent.
