“The Funeral” by Sara Eustáquio

“The Funeral”, the interesting short film by Sara Eustáquio, is a fascinating and courageous portrait of youth, narrated by an author who evidently reflects herself, with great sincerity, in this confession-tale of a young girl. From an expressive point of view, the film is short and surprising: just over four minutes to build a fascinating excursion into the maze of intimacy. Eustaquio’s gaze is completely original and an independent and courageous personality is also reflected in the aesthetic choices, which runs the risk of mixing formats and lights, filters and shots. This stylistic approach, reminiscent of the best examples of contemporary independent cinema, is not mere beauty. It is rather the mirror of the protagonist’s words and through the deformation of these acid colors a total emotional charge is expressed, otherwise confined to the words.

The camera moves sinuously and follows the protagonist as if following the course of her thoughts, with elegant sequences and fixed frames that glue the viewer’s gaze to the inert reality of this paralyzed youth. We hope to see a new film by Eustáquio very soon, to enter once again this wild youthful lyric.
