02 Giu “Astronauts” by Mariano Cabaco
“Astronauts”, the new short film by Mariano Cabaco, found a place in our memory from the very first minutes. The story is powerful and exciting, but it is above all true. The conscious gaze of a mature director makes the difference between reality and fiction. It is impossible not to grasp the sensitivity and strength of a formally flawless and poetically complete vision. Behind the beauty of exceptional cinematography, Cabaco is therefore able to express complex sensations with simplicity and personality. The courageous stylistic choices, such as the aspect ratio, the editing times and the choice of the narrative theme itself, reveal an author aware of his own gaze on the world and now ready for his debut feature film.
The theme of motherhood and sexuality intertwine in “Astronauts” in the same grotesque and unpredictable way in which it happens in reality. It is therefore easy to empathize on various levels with this story so complex that it turns out to be, in the end, simply human. Abandonment, renunciation and discrimination are themes delicately placed by the director between the soft folds of this beautiful directorial construction, which is certainly based on an equally valid script. In this way, even the film’s profoundly social investigation becomes an intimate search into personal conscience. To close this harmony of meaning there is certainly the interpretation of the protagonists, evidently able to expand the value of the screenplay and the visual system, in a desperate and exciting direction, strictly sentimental.
We can’t wait to see new films from this promising author.
